Pilates Class for NSP Members
Pilates and the Runner
There are several benefits to incorporating Pilates into your programme. Pilates can help you to achieve an overall level of fitness that cannot be achieved by running alone. The Pilates exercises build a foundation of strength and flexibility in the body. The exercises also help to correct problems that running creates in the body, thereby reducing your chance of injury.
Breathing
Most of us give little thought to how we are breathing, but breathing properly will make your body more efficient at getting oxygen to your muscles, which will help to increase your endurance and stamina.
Muscle Imbalance
Running is great exercise, but it only takes the legs through a limited range of motion and only straight ahead. This limited range of movement can create muscle imbalance. Without opposing movements, the body will compensate to avoid injury by working around the instability. Compensation puts stress on muscles, joints and the entire skeletal system.
