On July 21st, at the 5th and final event of the local Masters Track and Field season, the North Shields Poly men took the team trophy for the second year running. Last year’s victory was the first time we had ever won the trophy. Heaton Harriers gave us a run for our money and it was only in the last but one event that we built up what turned out to be an unassailable lead. Heaton Harriers won the women’s trophy, with the Poly women in third place. I should say that more often than not the women won the races they competed in and it was only lack of numbers that prevented them matching the men’s achievement.
As well as team trophies, medals are given for the best individual performance in each discipline and age category and we picked up our share of these awards. Young Peter Gallagher won a throws medal and David Stainthorpe won one for the high jump. On the track, Joanne Cooper, Kath Stewart, Karen Loughney and David Hughes all won individual medals in the sprint and middle distance categories. In addition, Guy Bracken (5000m), Kath Stewart (shot put, 200m ), Paul Richardson (high jump) and Sylvie Hargreaves (discus) all posted new league records this year.
