In further news about Katherine.  Showing how versatile she is as a runner, Katherine has  been selected to represent  the NE at the Inter Counties Fell Championships in Biggar, Scotland on Saturday 13th May.  She will be attending the championships with two other Poly athletes who have also been selected to compete, Will Robson and John Butters.  All three are coached by Phil Rees.Katherine Davis with her bikeIt’s early days for many people who are planning their holidays at the moment.  However, Katherine Davis has hers booked already.  She’ll be travelling to Soria, Spain but it won’t be a relaxing lie on the beach.   Katherine has been selected to take part in the ITU European Championships, Sprint Distance Duathlon which is a 5k run, followed by a 20k bike ride then a 2.5k run.

To qualify Katherine had to participate in a gruelling qualification race to reach the required standard.

Katherine says, ‘I wouldn’t have even attempted to qualify had it not been for the encouragement of the North Shields Poly Tri section and their belief that I was capable of reaching the standard.  The qualifying event was the second duathlon I’d done.  It was down in Bedford on a motor racing circuit with tight bends and switchbacks, which because of my inexperience made me feel a bit nervous.  This was made worse by the torrential rain and I was recovering from a cold so my expectations were quite low.’  However she later received the notification she’d wished for.

So just before 30th April, the day of the Duathlon event Katherine will be packing—not a swimsuit and flip flops but her race kit and running shoes. And maybe she’ll return with an extra item of luggage-a medal.
