World Record Relay Attempt around Mainland Britain

9 April, 2013 No Comments Events

My name’s Paul Shack and I’m organising an event later this year (June) which might of interest to your members.

It’s called the Great British Relay and we aim to break the world record.  Last year I was part of the Real Relay which ran the entire route of the Olympic torch prior to the games; I did two stages, Thirsk to Northallerton and Ilkley to Headingley (there are some embarrassing photos of me with the baton at Kirkstall Abbey!)  I thought it was one of the best things I have ever done and so in an attempt to recreate that experience and get a world record as well I’ve set up The Great British Relay.  The world record for the longest continuous run relay currently stands at 5640km; we’re going to do over 7000km.

I’m letting as many running clubs as possible know so they can be represented if they want to join in.

Our official charity is Sue Ryder but participants can raise money for whatever charity they choose. The website is www.greatbritishrelay.com and the facebook page is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Great-British-Relay/135316153307626.

All the best and good running!

I started attending the Poly from the age of 11 in 1978, which wasn't long after the club relocated from Collingwood in North Shields to where it is today. I had a brief spell with Wallsend Harriers in the mid 90s. I have always, and still do, compete in Track & Field competitions. I am on the management committee as the clubs Coaching Co-ordinator. I'm also a fully qualified Athletics Coach and Children's Athletics Coach.
